Recognition, Assessment, and Treatment of Suicidality

Program Purpose:
This workshop describes the extent of suicide in the general and special populations, distinguishes what suicidality is and the difference between self-harm and suicidality, explains the psychobiology of suicidality and its progression, and articulates the warning signs and symptoms using a simple and effective suicide assessment tool. It also teaches motivational interviewing techniques used in counseling suicidal individuals, explains a life-saving peer support protocol and how to implement it, and describes ethical considerations, documentation and confidentiality issues.

Presenter Bio:
Randi Jensen, MA, LMHC, CCDC, received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Washington and began her career in social service as a Resource and Education Counselor working with the seriously mental ill.  Randi obtained a Washington State Certification in Chemical Dependency Counseling and Chemical Dependency Professional Certification. She then went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Counseling from Antioch University, Seattle.  In 2010 Randi became the Director of The Soldiers Project Northwest, a non-profit organization providing unlimited, no cost, no report mental health counseling to current and former military members, their families and concerned others.  In addition to conducting seminars and presenting at various national conferences, Randi specializes in treatment for suicidality, trauma, and substance abuse.  Ms. Jensen describes her own recovery from 24 years of suicidality in her book, Just Because You’re Suicidal Doesn’t Mean You’re Crazy: The Psycho- biology of Suicide,about overcoming chronic suicidality through personal rebirth and peer support. She is currently writing a book describing her research on individuals in ongoing recovery from suicidality.

  • 10:25—The Endorphinergic Conditioning Effect of Suicidality; and Suicide Neural Pathways, Development and Progression
  • 12:00—LUNCH
  • 1:00 p.m.—Assessment and Treatment; and Motivational Interviewing Principles, Techniques & Skill Building Exercises
  • 2:40—Understanding Reciprocation and Collaborative Support Elements in Building Suicide Prevention Peer Support Groups; and Documentation and Clinician Self-Care
  • 4:15—4:30- Closing and Evaluations

The Washington Pastoral Counseling Association is honored to offer this continuing education workshop that meets the Washington State suicide assessment requirement for re-licensure. This workshop is suited for counselors, medical professionals, social workers, teachers, pastors, and lay persons who wish to form suicide prevention peer support groups.
